Deque University Designers Curriculum Certificate

One of the few designers asked to join the Accessibility Platform Team for Oracle Health and audit Oracle Cerner solutions for accessibility gaps.

On this team, I work with fellow design subject-matter experts, accessibility subject-matter experts, and developers. We inspect design system components, note when they do not meet accessibility standards, and find accessible solutions to replace them.

The goal of this team to is make sure all users can easily complete workflows when using Oracle Cerner solutions no matter if they are using a mouse, keyboard, or other assistive technology.

Project Example

Over the years Oracle-Cerner has created products using different code types and design systems, To meet accessibility standards, Oracle-Cerner is working on a passthrough where they are converting the old code to the newest and most up-to-date code.

My job is to look at the old code type’s components and map them to components in the new code type. Here is an example with checkboxes:

After looking through the component and its properties, I mapped out the gaps between the old and new code. For the passthrough, we need to make sure every component property has a 1 to 1 in the new code.

Once the gaps were identified, I looked at the new code component and made sure it met accessibility standards. Color contrast, keyboard expectations, proper labeling, and correct usage are some of the accessibility standards I looked for,
